Title of dissertation: THE EFFECT OF MENTAL STRESS ON BRAIN DYNAMICS AND PERFORMANCE RELATED TO ATTENTION CONTROL DURING A VIGILANCE TASK: AN ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION Bartlett Anne Healy Russell, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Dissertation directed by: Professor Bradley D. Hatfield Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences Program Department of Kinesiology Anxiety can increase distractibility and undermine the quality of psychomotor performance. Models of attention processing postulate that anxiety consumes limited executive resources necessary for maintaining goal-oriented, “top-down” attention control and suppressing stimulus-driven “bottom-up” distraction. Attention Control Theory (ACT) predicts that anxiety adversely affects the efficiency, and particularly inhibitory components of executive, frontally mediated top-down attention control. We used two approaches for examining this model. First, though attention affects synchrony among neural structures, information regarding how human oscillatory patterns (measured with electroencephalography, EEG) change as state anxiety increases is limited. Second, while anxiety affects the balance between top-down and bottom-up mechanisms, to our knowledge no one has yet measured anxiety’s effect on attention using a neural measure of top-down control in conjunction with more traditional bottom-up measures of attention capture (e.g., the P3 event related

Citicoline Improves Human Vigilance and Visual Working Memory: The Role of Neuronal Activation and Oxidative Stress

Introduction: Psychomotor performance task is used to assess the arousal and cognitive functions of the central nervous system. Alternatively, human visual working memory reflects the capability of the individual’s short-term memory. Psycho-mental stimuli are linked to the stimulation of Malondialdehyde (MDA) formations. Citicoline is a nootropic nucleotide agent with a favorable effect on the ...

‌‌‌‌‌Recourse Allocation in Young and Elderly Adults

Objectives: The role of cognitive process for postural control was shown in dual task studies. However, there was no definite evidence how verbal instructions influence the allocation of attention to postural control. This study determined whether young and elderly adult are able to deliberately control the resource allocation when performing a sensorimotor and cognitive task simultaneously and...

An fMRI Study of Risky Decision Making: The Role of Mental Preparation and Conflict

Introduction: The current study aimed to elucidate the role of preparatory cognitive control in decision making and its neural correlates using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). To this effect, by employing a series of new cognitive tasks, we assessed the role of preparatory cognitive control in monetary (risky) decision making. Methods: The participants had to decide between a...
